Our Editor's Take

The Working Genius Podcast with Patrick Lencioni explains six genius types and how to identify and apply them for a happier work life. Host Lencioni is an organizational health expert. He founded The Table Group to help companies function better. Lencioni has written several books, including the New York Times bestseller The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team.

On Lencioni's other podcast, At the Table, he often discussed working genius. His team realized the concept needed its own show. Lencioni's cohosts are cocreators of The 6 Types of Working Genius. Cody Thompson is the chief operating officer of The Table Group. Matt Lencioni is the company's content and podcast specialist. Tracy Noble is its chief development officer.

The Working Genius Podcast says everyone has two working geniuses. The other four genius types are either competencies or frustrations for them. The acronym WIDGET is an easy way to remember the six geniuses. They are wonder, invention, discernment, galvanizing, enablement, and tenacity. Lencioni and his team explain how each genius works. Someone with wonder can contemplate and consider how to maximize potential. An inventor likes to solve problems and innovate. The gift of discernment helps people evaluate ideas and use intuition. Galvanizers excite, inspire, and recruit people and resources. People with enablement make things possible and work on the inventor's ideas. Coworkers with tenacity finish projects others might only start.

Lencioni loved his job, but in 2020, he noticed frustration. It was because he's an inventor and discerner, but he was also galvanizing and enabling. He and his team created a test to help people identify their gifts. Lencioni says knowing one's geniuses is also helpful beyond work. Podcast listeners can consider them when planning vacations, volunteering, or assigning household chores.

On the podcast, guests express how their geniuses work for them. The hosts also discuss topics such as the best and worst jobs for genius types. Lencioni says one source of work frustration is people not knowing who they are or what they want to do. The Working Genius Podcast with Patrick Lencioni can help eliminate that stress.
