Our Editor's Take

Mystery Recipe is a cooking show for kids, but it's much more than that. The premise of the podcast is simple. Every episode introduces a new ingredient. The ingredients come together at the end of each season to make a whole dish.

The show's host is Molly Birnbaum, Editor in Chief of America's Test Kitchen Kids. At her side on the Mystery Recipe podcast is Mitsy, a purple oven mitt. Producer Chad Chenail makes regular appearances, as do guest listeners. Every season has its own intern. Meggy Eggy, a visually impaired egg timer, is the intern for season six. The intern for season five is Kyle, a butter knife who is passionate about fighting climate change.

Together, the cohosts of Mystery Recipe encourage listeners to develop a culinary imagination. At the same time, they discover science through food. The podcast walks young listeners through the steps of the scientific method. The listeners can then reach conclusions about density, pH, and more.

Through various segments, Mystery Recipe addresses various issues relevant to kids today. Even better, it does so at a pace suitable for younger audiences. "Pressing Questions" focuses on science. "Sustainable Solution" talks about environmental responsibility. "Ask A Grown-Up" brings in experts on disability rights, bread, and methane gas. Mitsy often needs to work through difficult emotions. All this happens in a warm atmosphere where mistakes are growth opportunities. In other words, a kitchen.

Mystery Recipe is a great show for young listeners. The show stays lively enough to entertain the busiest minds. Without seeming to, it's packed with educational material and social-emotional learning. It encourages children to consider the needs and perspectives of those around them. It's an excellent choice for after-school or weekend listening. While the podcast is no longer making new episodes, the timeless nature of the episodes means the show is still fun to listen to.
