Our Editor's Take

The Kid Stories podcast shares fun and original stories for young kids to enjoy. The creator, writer, and host is Phil Bechtel. He is a stay-at-home dad with a passion for writing stories. Through the podcast, Phil encourages kids to be curious and use their imaginations.

Phil is a former kindergarten teacher. He ensures that storytime on the podcast is educational, too. He creates fun "Story Starters" in which he begins a story, and his little listeners must finish it. This task is ideal for kids of all ages to spend an afternoon getting creative.

Kid Stories episode "A Deal With a Crow" starts one such tale. Phil reveals the character of Zuri, who likes to check her bird perch every day. She leaves peanuts for the crows to eat, and in return, they bring her pieces of shiny rubbish. One day, Zuri finds a new-looking silver necklace on the perch. She can hear the crow talking to her as soon as she tries it on. The crow asks Zuri for a favor in exchange for valuable gifts.

Now, it's up to the listeners to decide what happens next. Should Zuri help the crow? How much does she want the gifts? The whole family can take part in this creative exercise to create a new story from this imaginative beginning.

Other episodes share original tales that make great bedtime stories. There are stories of evil robots and "Good Guy Pirates." Fans of goblins and trolls can enjoy stories of adventure with magical creatures. One tells the tale of a dragon called Fivetails whose special tea is missing. Fivetails must steal it back from the "Cloud Trolls." Over four episodes, this mysterious tale unfolds involving magic spells and an imaginative escape plan.

The Kid Stories podcast provides tales of adventure and magic for little ones. Each story plays over several parts, which is ideal for different bedtime routines. New episodes air weekly.
