You’ve heard of Jackson Pollock but you may have never heard of Lee Krasner. Krasner was an artist, Pollock’s wife, and the woman who made him famous. She also changed everything about the landscape of modern art. This is a story about love, power, alcoholism and an ill-timed death. Hosted by curator, author, and broadcaster Katy Hessel, this 6-episode series, offers an inside look into two of the greatest artists of the 20th century, and how their vision impacts ours.

And listen back to season one, where host Helen Molesworth revisits the artist Ana Mendieta’s death and the trial that followed– interrogating both the silence and the protest that have accompanied her story ever since.

Our Editor's Take

The Death of an Artist podcast is a retrospective. But it is not the kind one might expect. In fact, members and patrons of the art world may prefer to avoid exhibiting it. Death of an Artist revisits the murder mystery of Ana Mendieta.

As this podcast details, Ana's death shook and split the art world in two. It wasn't only because of the shock of it all. Ana allegedly fell from the 34th-floor apartment in New York she shared with her husband. Adding to it was the fact that her husband became the prime suspect. He is no other than Carl Andre, the famed minimalist sculptor.

This true crime podcast details the scandalous fate of one of the art world's most high-profile relationships. Both were major personalities in their respective scenes, and their works were in high demand. Theirs, as accounts would have it, was a relationship that embodied "opposites attract." Death of an Artist tells their stories.

Carl was already established in the art world when he met Ana. He came from Quincy, Massachusetts. She was a Cuban refugee who burst onto the avant-grade scene from Iowa. Nobody could have anticipated it was going to be a fatal attraction.

In light of the MeToo movement, Ana's work is still relevant today. One of the major themes she continued to address was violence against women.

Los Angeles contemporary art curator Helen Molesworth hosts Death of an Artist. Her interest in this story started out of curiosity. Soon, she noticed the "veil of silence" that had fallen over this story. Helen felt even more compelled to discuss it.

She tells the story of Ana's murder with the help of investigative journalist Robert Katz. He interviewed art world insiders about Ana's case back in the day. These same folks would no longer want to talk today. But on this podcast, their audio clips do so for them. Has Ana received the justice she deserved? Listeners can hear for themselves. Death of an Artist is a good listen for both art aficionados and true crime podcast fans.
