Our Editor's Take

The 500 with Josh Adam Meyers celebrates music history. On the podcast, the host discusses some of the best albums of the past decades with celebrity guests. Listeners hear about the Grateful Dead, the Beach Boys, R.E.M., David Bowie, and more of the greats. Meyers is a touring stand-up comic and rock musician. He combines his passions for comedy and music on the podcast. He has performed as an opener for the artist Jelly Roll.

Each podcast episode focuses on an album that Rolling Stone magazine counts among the 500 greatest of all time. In one episode, comedian Justine Marino talks about Madonna’s Like a Prayer. The 1989 album ranks at number 239 on Rolling Stone’s list. Like a Prayer earned acclaim among critics for its songwriting and sound. It sold more than 15 million copies worldwide. Marino recalls how the album empowered her as a woman. It also made her get up and dance. Actress and comedian Loni Love discusses Jackie Wilson’s 1992 album Mr. Excitement! She and Meyers reflect on the joyous tone of this pioneering R&B artist.

Blues musician Joe Bonamassa joins the podcast to discuss Howlin’ Wolf. The blues singer’s 1962 self-titled album has a rocking chair illustration on its sleeve. That’s why many people also know it as The Rockin’ Chair Album. The image reflects the bluesy ethos that made it popular. When Eddie Pepitone guests, he and Meyers recall how The Who’s My Generation reflected the rage of the 1960s. Its raw energy and early punk inflections are things Pepitone still loves today.

In other episodes, Meyers talks with comedians like Marc Maron, Brendan Sagalow, and James Mattern. Matt Pinfield, a former MTV VJ who’s now a heralded music executive, also joins the podcast. He shares his extensive knowledge while discussing Mott the Hoople. The group's 1972 album, Young Dudes, is number 484 on Rolling Stone’s list.

With 500 albums to celebrate, the podcast explores many genres, artists, and movements. Music fans can hear new episodes of The 500 with Josh Adam Meyers weekly.
