Our Editor's Take

Funny My Way is a revolutionary comedy podcast. Host JB Smoove serves as a tour guide throughout the series. He leads listeners through the lives and accomplishments of six legendary Black comedians. These comedians helped lead the way for comedians like Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock. Eddie Murphy even made the movie Dolemite Is My Name to tell the story of Rudy Ray Moore, one of the comics featured on this show.

One legend discussed on Funny My Way is Moms Mabley. She was a prominent female figure in comedy history. Mabley was best known as one of the first successful female standup comedians. She performed on stage and released comedy albums. Her controversial coverage of racial and sexual topics was shocking for her time. This fearlessness earned her the respect and adoration of audiences worldwide. Margaret Cho tells Smoove on the podcast how much Mabley inspired her.

Another hero talked about is Redd Foxx. Foxx began as an X-rated comedian, using brazen jokes and unfiltered commentary. His shamelessness brought in crowds who loved his bold approach. He is famous for his role as Fred Sanford in Sanford and Son. The show's controversial topics changed the sitcom world's norms forever.

Paul Mooney, Flip Wilson, Dick Gregory, and Rudy Ray Moore are also featured artists on the podcast. JB Smoove elaborates on their innovative approaches, rise to fame, and lasting impacts. The host features each star in a meaningful way through commentary and playbacks. Relevant guests from comedy, politics, and television also share their thoughts and experiences.

The six comedians made monumental contributions to the comedy world. Their unapologetic styles removed barriers and highlighted genuine societal problems. Their work created a foundation for future Black comedians to build. Listeners hear about how they made significant advancements for Black people in comedy. Their lasting influence is still prevalent in entertainment today. As a result, countless others have also become inspired to do comedy in their own way. Fans of this six-part series may also like May I Elaborate? Sound Wisdom from JB Smoove. That's the host's inspirational podcast.
